Cactus Country

As many adventures start, we saw this gorgeous attraction on social media, and my friend Tiaarin and I knew we had to make a day of it and see a unique site in south east Australia, Cactus Country.

From Melbourne, we had just under a 3 hour drive north to Strathmerton, which is near the border to New South Wales. As we pulled in, we drove passed a few fields on our left which held a few donkeys (they’ll feature later) and fruit orchards on our right, and headed to the entrance of Cactus Country. It felt like you were driving up to a small town in Mexico, which the bright colours and the dessert plants everywhere.

The grounds were beautiful. There are plenty of walking tracks that take you around to see the massive cacti, as well as the smaller flowering ones. We spent a good few hours exploring and admiring the care that went in to maintaining these grounds.

We finished up our day with a snack at the cafe on site, which sold cactus flavoured ice-cream and cakes, and then a quick visit to the gift shop.

On the way out, I made a point to spend some time loving on the donkeys out the front. The day at the gardens was awesome, but I think my highlight was cuddling up to these adorable friends.

Overall, there’s not much to say about the visit that the photos wont say more effectively, but it was a beautiful and unique day out.

By this time it was getting a little later in the day, and with a 3 hour drive back home we need to make a move. We did make the most of being so far north in Victoria and made a quick detour to see “The Giant Strawberry” on our way home. It was a little disappointing for one of Australia’s “Giant” attractions, but we can tick it off the bucket list!
