Day 3 – A Profoundly Beautiful Day
We left the Airbnb that I had mentally moved into this morning, and honestly I’m still mourning the loss. Sitting on that balcony staring at all of Hobart, with a backdrop of Mount Wellington has become a morning ritual that I’ll miss tremendously. But alas, we got ourselves up, cleared the place, checked out and got on the road towards MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art.
MONA… I’m honestly not sure how to describe this place. Profound, provocative, perverse. Astoundingly beautiful. Imaginative. I’d say that the only way you’ll see the impact fully would be to make your way here yourself.
We found our way out from under the mountain that MONA is carved into, and headed to grab some food at a local Japanese restaurant, then off to the next accommodation, with one stop at a small art display on the way. This is where we decided to scrap all of our plans for the evening and head up to the peak of the backdrop we’ve had for the last few days, and try to catch a sunset of our dreams. We’re still staying on the slopes of my Mount Wellington, so we were happy to see that this next place has a bit of a sweet view as well. Everyone has been pretty tired, the afternoon was spent in a silent house, with beds and couches occupied with sleepy souls.
Ordering dinner delivery put us a little behind with our plans but we were headed up the mountain and made it just in time to see the clouds roll in and the sky turn red. We were in such a rush after the dinner shenanigans, that we weren’t really prepared for the ARCTIC WINDS that blasted through us the second we opened the door. The “feels like” temperature had a 1 before the decimal point. Rude if you ask me. But losing feeling to all extremities was completely worth it. The Martian landscape, the rolling clouds, it all made for a positively dystopian feel which made my head light and my heart happy. We unfortunately missed the daylight to enjoy the city side of the mountain fully, but once the sun disappeared we were blessed with the twinkling lights of the Hobart CBD to round out the night. We were even escorted by a roo and a wallaby briefly on our drive down the mountain.
I’ve had such an incredible day. I’m sad to leave tomorrow, but we do have a cute little family day at Salamanca markets and a fish and chip lunch on a picturesque beach.
