Day 3 – What the Duck?

It’s so strange to have a body clock more reliable than an alarm. Is this what being a 30 something is?

Our first stop today was to go visit Larry the Lobster, and tick off another “big thing” in Australia. This is probably the most impressive “big thing” I’ve seen personally.

Larry is in Kingston, and on the way to visit we saw a sign advertising the “Duck Classic Easter Sunday”, which of course had to be investigated further. It turns out this is a rubber duck race that they hold every year over Easter here in Kingston. We were just in time to see the “corporate ducks” race, where local businesses have sponsored duck-sized and shaped floats, decorated them and entered them into this race that spans a small section of Maria River. I can’t say I’ve ever thought about attending a duck race, but here we are. It was pretty cute seeing the turnout and having the locals so excited for it.

The thing I have been most excited for this trip is exploring Robe Glass Beach, which was next on the itinerary today. Unfortunately, we weren’t super prepared, and ended up getting there at high tide, which meant that there was very little beach to explore. Amy and I propped ourselves up on a cliff face just out of reach of the waves (mostly), and combed through what we could find. We found so many little treasures to fill my momento vial with, I was very happy with the hoard! Today there was also a surf competition nearby, which the boys went to to keep themselves occupied.

After seeing Larry the Lobster this morning, it was on the to do list to get some fresh lobster ourselves! We found a place with good reviews close by and tried it out, the boys were very happy, I don’t quite get the hype.

We stopped to check out the local jetty and obelisk and lighthouse which is all along a walking loop along the ocean. The lookouts and views of the ocean and cliffs were spectacular!

While driving we spotted a sign for Mike’s jerky that we made a pitstop at, as well before another quick stop along the beach to check the tide level, just in case, before leaving Robe for Naracoorte again for the evening. I think we’re booked into steak joint for dinner that looks pretty good.

It’s our last day tomorrow which I’m pretty bummed about, but we still have one more tour booked in, which is one last cave, but a little different than the ones we’ve seen already. I’m really looking forward to it!
