Day 2 – Tanah Lot
I think I may just be the most pale person in Bali. Today was hot, real hot! I think I managed to get sunburnt before 10 am! But after our breakfast we got picked up and taken to Tanah Lot Temple by our driver Tommy. Now this place was gorgeous. It’s a tiny little temple on this tiny little island that you can only get to when there’s a low tide. Unfortunately it was high tide so we couldn’t actually get to the temple, but it was stunning to see the winding stairs go down into the ocean with huge waves coming up behind and breaking over the top.
What I found quite out of place is that in the temple grounds there were stalls everywhere, and even a few restaurants where I drank my first coconut! But one of my favourite things there was the snake show! I’m devastated that I didn’t end up getting any photos, but I got to pat (and hold if I had wished to) a huge python. She was beautiful. I think that when you see creatures like that on the tv and in books you, kind of loose the majesty of them. Plus they’re freaking huge up close!
In the same part you also had the option of having photos with bats, an eagle and two beautiful owls. I do have a weak spot for owls, so that may just be my favourite moment of the trip, at least so far.
Our driver was fantastic, offering to take photos of Drew and I at every viewing platform. If there’s one thing I have discovered being here is that the people are lovely, unless they’re trying to sell you something. After our trip to the temple we decided to dabble in some shopping, but as a quiet and shy person, the whole bartering process was quite daunting and confronting… I’m sure we ended up paying too much for our stuff, but I guess it all comes with practice!
But as for now, we are back at our villa, kicking back, eating these cool seaweed Pringles that we found at a local store, with our feet in the pool. What more can you ask for?
